DACH Region Seeks Decarbonization Ideas for Glass Industry

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The global glass-manufacturing industry is seeking ways to better reduce carbon emissions. One of the most promising answers could be green hydrogen, which is produced through the electrolysis of water, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity.

Green hydrogen, which currenly makes up less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production, could be used to decarbonize sectors that are hard to electrify. Europe's DACH region--Germany, Austria and Switzerland--is home to several projects seeking to explore green hydrogen's potential.

But many questions regarding the supply, availability and economic viability of green hydrogen remain unanswered. Two other key technologies might improve the glass-manufacturing industry's carbon footprint:
  • Fully electric melting furnaces, which melt the batch by introducing electric energy via electrodes. At this time, the use of regenerative power alone is not sufficent to fire bigger melting units.
  • Hybrid furnaces, which could get up to 80% of the energy required via electrodes, and get the remaining energy by burning hydrogen.
Industrial Info is tracking 57 glass-manufacturing projects across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, of which 28 are set to be completed in 2023.
