Dakota Gasification Company Nears Completion on CO2 Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Dakota Gasification Company (Beulah, North Dakota) is nearing completion and start-up on a $40 million CO2 expansion project at its Great Plains Coal Gasification plant in Beulah North Dakota. Construction on the CO2 expansion began in 2005 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2006.

The expansion is designed to increase volumes of CO2 that are moved to via pipeline from the plant to the Weyburn oil field located near Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The Weyburn field is a CO2 flood oil production field owned by EnCana Corporation. When completed the expansion will increase the daily CO2 transmission capacity originating from the Great Plains plant to160 million cubic feet per day from a pre expansion level 95 million cubic feet.

The scope of the project entailed adding a third Man Turbo 20,000 horsepower air cooled eight-stage electric drive compressor package, pipeline additions in Canada and the construction of a new Booster Station on the pipeline. Dakota Gasification self-performed the purchasing and is presently managing the construction of the project. In addition to this expansion Dakota Gasification expects to begin its 2006 maintenance program on April 23 when it takes its train one offline for two weeks followed a week later by train two. In addition to the production of 200 million cubic feet per day of CO2 and through its use of coal gasification, the Great Plains plant produces ammonium sulfate, and each year it produces 400,000 tons of anhydrous ammonia, 33 million pounds of dephenolized cresylic acid, 3.1 million liters of krypoton-xenon, 24 million gallons of liquid nitrogen, seven million gallons of Naphtha, and 33 million pounds of Phenol.
