DART Nears Construction on $1.7 Billion in Light Rail Projects in Dallas

Buoyed by $700 million in federal funding, DART expects to begin construction on the $525 million phase I Southeast corridor expansion in December of this year...

Released Wednesday, October 04, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) (Dallas, Texas), working with ACT 21 (Dallas, Texas), a joint venture of 30 engineering, design and environmental consulting firms, is completing the engineering and has selected Herzog/Archer Western Construction Company (Arlington, Texas) to act as both the construction manager and general contractor for a pair of light rail projects in Dallas, Texas with a combined value of $1.7 billion.

Buoyed by $700 million in federal funding, DART expects to begin construction on the $525 million phase I Southeast corridor expansion in December of this year and on the $1.2 billion phase I Northwest corridor expansion in the spring of 2007.

The first phase of the Southeast corridor expansion will involve the construction of a 10.2-mile light rail transit system expansion with eight stations, two transit centers and four traction power substations that will extend service from the Pearl Street Station in downtown Dallas to Elam Road to the South.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the Northwest extension will involve the construction of 17.5 miles of rail with twelve stations that will run from Downtown Dallas to Frankford Road in Carrollton, Texas. This extension will also involve the addition of seven traction power substations as well as a rail operating facility. Current schedules call for the Southeast corridor expansion project to be completed first in 2010, with the Northwest corridor expansion completion following in 2012.

The passage of the Transportation Act in 2005 allowed this project to receive its massive federal funding and finally move forward to the construction stage of development. Additional expansion work is currently being planned by DART for the Dallas area and will be further developed once construction on these two expansions has begun.
