Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Privately held E85 Incorporated (Kingston, Washington) started out with big plans in 2005 to build ten new fuel ethanol plants across the country and produce over 1 billion gallons of ethanol annually. Today, only one plant has moved into the construction phase while five projects have been cancelled. The latest announcement came out last week when the company announced that plans to build two plants in Ohio have been cancelled. The announcement comes on the heels of a cancelled project in Dexter, New Mexico following cancelled plans to build in Klamath Falls, Oregon and Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The Ohio plants were to be built in Lancaster and Newark, and the company looks to be pulling out of Ohio all together. The companies Wahoo, Nebraska project appears to be the only site moving forward with construction. E85 purchased the projects development from a cooperative developing the project named Wahoo Ethanol LLC.

Plans to build in Corunna, Michigan are still moving forward and three additional U.S. plant sites have yet to be announced by the company.

Many developing ethanol projects across the country have been announced but very few have moved into the field construction stage due to the rising costs of corn. Analysis believe corn prices will stabilize in the near future making way for a new batch of plant construction to begin.

Currently, 121 ethanol biorefineries nationwide have a capacity to produce nearly 6.3 billion gallons annually. Additionally, 76 biorefineries are under construction and are expanding that will add more than 6.2 billion gallons of capacity when complete.

Industrial Info's Ethanol Production Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging synthetic fuels market. This database covers 123 ethanol plants currently in operation and 290 plants under development. It also covers thirty-two operational biodiesel plants and 75 biodiesel plants under development.
