Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Elango Industries Limited (BSE:513452) (EIL) (Chennai, India) has brought Phase I of its Gummudipoondi project on stream after a delay of more than a year. The project, which involves a single, 63-megawatt (MW) unit, is now operating at full load.
According to Elango Industries sources, the 63-MW unit was synchronized in October 2012, followed by commissioning in December 2012. The project, which was due to be commissioned in September 2011, has been delayed primarily due to contractual delays and acquisitions of statutory clearances.
The plant generates 1 billion kilowatt-hours per annum of electricity, which is being sold to the captive consumers, commercial establishments and power traders in the Tamil Nadu state.
Hangzhou Steam Turbine Company Limited (200771:CH) (Hangzhou, China) has manufactured the steam turbine generator set for the plant, while the boiler has been supplied by ABB India Limited (BSE:500029) (Bangaluru, India). The plant runs on an 80:20 blend of domestic and imported coal. The requirement of domestic coal is met from the Talcher Coalfields area of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (Sambalpur, India), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (BSE:533278) (Kolkata, India). EIL has entered into a contract with Coal and Oil Company DMCC (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) for the sourcing of coal from Indonesia.
The company had appointed M.N. Dastur & Company Private Limited (Kolkata, India) as the project consultant for the preparation of the Techno Economic Feasibility report and floating competitive global tender for major plant equipment and contracts.
Established in 1989, Elango Group has been engaged in the manufacturing of steel ingots from 1991 to 2003. The group entered into the power sector through its investment in Kaveri Gas Power Limited (GPL) (Chennai, India), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in 2005. GPL runs a natural gas-based captive power plant of 14-MW capacity at Maruthur village, in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.
