Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--EquiPower Resources Corporation, the owner of Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, Massachusetts, has reaffirmed it will retire the coal-fired facility as planned in 2017. Industrial Info has confirmed this information with sources at the plant.

Brayton Point is one of three large New England plants shutting down in the next few years. ISO New England determined that Brayton Point, one of the largest generators of electricity in New England, is needed to help meet demand and asked its owner to keep the plant running beyond 2017.

Brayton's shutdown could lead to higher electric bills for households and businesses, as the cost of building new plants and transmission facilities to replace the old plant are passed along to customers.

The 51-year-old plant has been on the edge of closing for some time now. Brayton Point, long considered among the state's dirtiest power plants, is among some of the last of the large coal-burning facilities in Massachusetts.

Brayton's owners have agreed to pay the town $16.75 million through 2015, according to the town assessor's office.

Seth Kaplan, vice president for policy and climate advocacy for Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), a New England environmental group, issued the following statement: "This announcement provides certainty about the closure of the Brayton Point power plant. The fact that the largest coal- and oil-fired power plant in New England will definitively close by June 2017 is good news for the communities of Massachusetts and New England, and is an important step on our path to a cleaner energy future and healthy environment."

Brayton Point Power Plant began operating in 1963 and has a total generating capacity of 1,161 megawatts when at full load.
