FPL Increases Renewable Energy Capacity in Florida

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--FPL Energy LLC (Juno Beach, Florida), a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach), has chosen Lauren Engineers & Constructors Incorporated (Abilene, Texas) to construct a solar-energy unit at the company's existing 2,663-megawatt (MW) natural-gas-fired Martin County Power Station near Indiantown, Florida.

FPL will utilize parabolic-trough solar technology to generate 75-MW of renewable energy. An array of thermal-energy collectors will be constructed. Each collector contains a span of tubing running its length filled with heat-transfer fluid. This fluid runs through the tube and absorbs the concentrated sunlight and is then used to produce steam and drive a turbine generator.

Lauren expects to begin foundation work during January 2009, with mechanical construction set to kick off by the summer. Project completion is expected in the spring or fall of 2010.

Site preparation is also being conducted at FPL's 25-MW Desoto County Solar project in Arcadia, Florida. SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWRA) (San Jose, California) is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for this project and the 10-MW Kennedy Space Center Solar plant (Cape Canaveral, Florida), construction of which is scheduled for kickoff in spring 2009, with completion scheduled by 2010.
