Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--China Gezhouba Group No.1 Engineering Company Limited (Yichang, Hubei), a subsidiary of China Gezhouba Construction Group (CGGC) (Yichang, Hubei), completed the dam plinth and abutment excavation for China Guodian Corporation's (Beijing) 1,700-megawatt (MW) Houziyan Hydropower Station ahead of schedule on April 6, 2013, according to an announcement from the CGGC on April 17.
The Houziyan Hydropower Station, located in Kangding County of the Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture, is the ninth cascade project planned on the main stream of the Dadu River, a tributary of the Changjiang River in southwest China's Sichuan province. It is also a key project planned in the nation's 11th Five-Year Energy Development Plan (2006-2010); a key project in supporting the economic and social development for the Tibetan living area in Sichuan; and one of the 23 key projects listed in the nation's western development program.
The project mainly involves a 223.5-meter-high concrete face rockfill dam, the second-highest of its kind in China, with a total reservoir capacity of 704 million cubic meters and a powerhouse furnished with four hydraulic turbine generating units, each of 425 MW.
Guodian Dadu River Hydropower Development Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan), a subsidiary of GD Power Development Company Limited (SHA:600795) (Beijing), the listed flagship of China Guodian Corporation, is responsible for the development and future operation of the project. HydroChina Chengdu Engineering Corporation (Chengdu) is responsible for the design and engineering of the project.
The project received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on November 8, 2011. Construction of main works for the project then kicked off. According to the schedule, the first unit of the project is expected to begin operation in July 2016, and the whole project is expected to begin operations in 2017.
