Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mere Power Nzema Limited (MPNL) (Kumasi, Ghana) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Company of Ghana for the output from the $320 million solar photovoltaic (PV) plant near the villages of Awiaso and Akpandue, in the country's western region.
When fully commissioned, the plant will produce 155 megawatts (MW) from more than 600,000 solar PV modules. It will be funded by MPNL.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in September this year, and it is scheduled for completion within 24 months of the starting date. MPNL project director Paul Forjoe said that financing is in progress, having been secured with the pre-condition that consent for the project is obtained from the government. Consent is expected to be obtained without any problems.
"We expect a first power generation in the first quarter of 2015, and we expect in a sequential way, month-by-month, to add onto the power that is being generated onto the grid," Forjoe said.
The additional "green" energy provided by the project will make the national energy system more efficient and promote the growth of the economy.
