Groundbreaking of Shenhua Group's Wanzhou Coal Power and Port Integration Project Begins in Chongqing

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The groundbreaking ceremony for China Shenhua Group Company Limited's (Beijing) Wanzhou Coal Power and Port Integration Project was held in Xintian Town, Wanzhou District, in Chongqing City on July 28, 2012, according to an announcement from Shenhua Group on the same day.

The economic development of Chongqing has continued at steady growth since the beginning of this year. "To keep on this trend on development, energy dispatching and safety is very important," said Huang Qifan, the mayor of Chongqing City, at the ceremony. Shenhua Wanzhou Coal Power and Port Integration Project is a key project in building the energy safety system in Chongqing, which will not only solve the urgent demand for coal and power in the Three Gorges reservoir area, but also will greatly promote the local economic development. Huang also reviewed the sound cooperation between Shenhua Group and Chongqing City and wished that the project be put into operation as early as possible.

As reported, Shenhua Wanzhou's Coal Power and Port Integration Project will be invested and operated by Shenhua Shendong Electric Power Company Limited (Shenmu, Shaanxi), a subsidiary of Shenhua Group. The project is planned to have six 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired units, a 10 million-metric-ton coal storage base, and an associated transfer port, with a total investment of about $3.75 billion. The investment of the power project in Phase I will be about $1.3 billion. As the first thermal power project with 1,000-MW units in southwest China, the project will play an important demonstrative role in supporting the economic development in the Three Gorges reservoir area upon completion.

Huang Qifan and Zhang Xiwu, the chairman of Shenhua Group, addressed on the ceremony. Among the other leaders and representatives who attended the ceremony was Zhang Dejiang, the vice premier of the State Council and party secretary for Chongqing City.
