Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--HDR Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska), an engineering and construction specialist with an increasingly global role, is involved in nearly $21 billion in active projects, according to Industrial Info's Project Platform, including about $8.3 billion in the U.S. that have reached advanced engineering or construction phases. The bulk of these projects are in the Oil & Gas Production, Transportation and Power Generation industries.
The largest project involving HDR is under construction and set to be completed early next year: Kinder Morgan Incorporated's (NYSE:KMI) (Houston, Texas) $2.5 billion Elba Island LNG liquefaction plant near Savannah, Georgia, which is designed to convert 210 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas sourced from shale formations into 2.5 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project received authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy to export its product to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) countries in 2012, and to non-FTA countries late last year. A $50 million pretreatment unit, which will process 350 million standard cubic feet per day, also is under construction. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the liquefaction plant and the pretreatment unit.
Following the completion of the LNG facility, Kinder Morgan expects to begin construction of a $1.5 billion second train at Elba Island, which would convert 140 million standard cubic feet per day into 1.5 million tons per year. As with the first train, Shell will purchase all LNG produced, under a 20-year contract with Kinder Morgan. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
HDR MEI Incorporated, an engineering consultancy formed when HDR acquired MEI LLC, an LNG consulting firm, in early 2015, is performing engineering services for all three aspects of the Elba Island project. Earlier this year, Kinder Morgan sold a 49% stake in Elba Liquefaction Company LLC, which is responsible for the construction of the complex, to EIG Global Energy Partners (Washington, D.C.), forming a joint venture. For more information, see March 2, 2017, article - Kinder Morgan Sells Stake in Elba Island LNG Facility, Looks to Trans Mountain Joint Venture.
HDR also is performing engineering services for a plant that is in the rapidly growing field of natural gas-fired power generation: Holland Board of Public Works' $145 million Holland Energy Park in Holland, Michigan, which is set to wrap up this summer. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) facility will use two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all from Siemens AG (Paris, France), to produce 125 megawatts (MW). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
HDR Engineering is a consultant on transmission projects across North America, including two major components of Hydro-Quebec's (Montreal, Quebec) Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) Transmission Line: the $180 million Luyster Creek Convertor Station in Astoria, New York, and the $65 million Astoria Annex GIS Substation in Long Island City, New York. The stations have capacities of 320 and 345 kilovolts (kV), respectively. The line runs from Hydro-Quebec's Hertel Substation in Montreal, to a new converter station in Astoria, and then to another Hydro Quebec converter substation across the border. The project is driven by an agreement among the U.S., Canada and Mexico to source about half of their power from clean generation sources by 2025. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Astoria and Long Island City substations, as well as the $2.2 billion mainline.
HDR also is at work on a slew of commuter rail projects, including one set to be completed this summer: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's $340 million initial phases of the Green Line extension in Canton, Massachusetts, for which HDR is in a partnership with Gilbane Incorporated (Providence, Rhode Island). The 1.3-mile track will include three train stations, a bridge and a bus station. HDR and Gilbane also are preparing for the $449 million fourth-phase extension, which will run 3.2 miles and include four train stations and the widening and reconstruction of five bridges. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the initial phases and fourth phase of the extension.
