Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan), along with the Black Lake First Nation are considering the development a hydroelectric power station in northern Saskatchewan. The Tazi Twé Hydroelectric power station will be located on the Chicken 224 Indian Reserve, about seven kilometers northeast of the community of Black Lake. The total estimated value of the project is about C$630 million ($490 million).
The Tazi Twé power station will consist of a powerhouse with two fixed-blade Kaplan turbine generator units. The station will generate 50 megawatts (MW). The earliest a decision will be made to proceed with the project is late 2016 with construction expected to start by the third quarter of 2017. SaskPower is currently working with the KGS Group (Winnipeg) and Kiewit/EBC-TTSP (Calgary) as part of an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) approach to assess the feasibility of proceeding with the project. The project is not yet at the detailed procurement stage.
Tazi Twé will have a water intake and power tunnel, which will divert water from Black Lake to the powerhouse. It will not require a dam on the Fond du Lac River; therefore, the land will not be at risk of flooding.
The project is estimated to create about 250 site preparation and construction jobs at the peak of construction. About 4-6 permanent positions will be created to operate and maintain the power station. It is slated for full operation by the end of 2020.
