Interstate Biofuels Moves Closer to Biodiesel Plant Construction in New England Region

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held biodiesel start-up Interstate Biofuels Incorporated (Roslyn Heights, New York) moved closer to the beginning of development of a new biodiesel plant that will be located in the former Niagara and Centennial mills plant building in Lenox, Massachusetts.

A meeting with the Conservation Commission took place last week regarding wetland areas on the 6-acre. The meeting is the first of many the company will need to go through to obtain approvals before construction can start on the plant.

Plans call for the renovation of the building and the installation of a transesterification reactor and supporting equipment to process animal fats and vegetable oil feedstocks to produce 15 million gallons of biodiesel, as well as glycerin, a byproduct of biodiesel production.

The company expects final permit approvals later this month and has hired SK Design Group Incorporated (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) to aid in the permitting process and provide preliminary design work.

Construction is expected to get under way in March or April of this year. The plant is expected to be online by the fourth quarter of 2010. Capacity from the plant will help meet the growing demand for heating oil in the New England region.

Costs to build the plant are in the $30 million range.
