Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) (Atlanta, Georgia) is investing heavily in new research facilities to bolster both scientific discovery and educational capacity. In 2004, the school has completed one major project and has begun two others, with a combined value of over $100 million.
MCG recently opened the Interdisciplinary Research Building Phase II, a $27 million, four-story, 94,000-square-foot addition that doubled the size of the existing Interdisciplinary Research facility. As first reported by Industrialinfo.com in 2002, the expansion provides research laboratory and office space for the MCG Department of Physiology, Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine and the Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development. Lord, Aeck & Sargent (Atlanta, Georgia) designed the building, with Turner Construction (Atlanta, Georgia) managing construction.
The new home for MCG's Schools of Allied Health Sciences and Nursing is now under construction. Known as the Health Sciences Building, the $37 million, 183,000 -square- foot facility will feature five floors housing offices, specialized classrooms, and laboratories and two floors of more traditional classrooms. S/L/A/M Collaborative of Atlanta designed the project.
Rounding out the current construction activity is the $54 million Cancer Research Center. The five-story, 160,000-square-foot project will accommodate research in areas including cellular therapeutics and immunotherapy. MCG hopes the new center will eventually obtain National Cancer Institute designation. Cooper Carry (Atlanta, Georgia) and NBBJ (Columbus, Ohio) collaborated on the project's design.
