Released Wednesday, October 07, 2020
Hurricane Delta moved across Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday as a Category 2 storm. It is expected to regain its momentum and potentially become a Category 4 storm by Thursday, as it reaches the central Gulf of Mexico. Currently, 299 production platforms stand in the hurricane's path, with a potential shut-in loss of 952,312 barrels per day (BBL/d) of oil and 1,533 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas. Industrial Info has confirmed 39 platforms are already shut in, with a total idled capacity of 581,261 BBL/d of oil and 454 MMSCFD of natural gas.
The current landfall predictions put Hurricane Delta just west of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, encompassing an area with more than 400 industrial plants that could be impacted by high winds and storm surges. In the Baton Rouge area, there are eight petroleum refineries, two ethylene producers, 12 large power plants and at least 14 onshore gas-processing plants that could be taken offline in advance of the storm making landfall on Friday.
