Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Imperial Oil Limited (NYSE:IMO)(Toronto, Canada) has advanced the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) to the project definition phase and is close to holding public hearings for the new pipeline as a part of the permitting process. The MGP is a natural gas pipeline proposal to produce, process, and transport natural gas and NGLs from the Mackenzie Delta in the far north of Canadas Northwest Territories near Inuvik to pipeline interconnections in the far north of Alberta.
The current proposal entails the construction of a 1,220-kilometer pipeline originating near Inuvik and following the Mackenzie Valley to a point just inside of Alberta to transport 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. At Inuvik a natural gas processing plant would be constructed and would process gas from three anchor fields in the area. 12,000 to 15,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of NGLs would be produced at the Inuvik facility and would be pumped to Norman Wells, Alberta, in a pipeline that would be constructed in parallel to the main gas pipeline.
Four new compressor stations and a heater station, located near the end of the pipeline, would support the pipeline. All the compression needed to support the pipeline will be turbine based. Imperial Oil is leaning toward utilizing either GE LM2500 or Solar turbine compressor packages for the project.
Imperial Oil is currently working with Colt Engineering Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) as the owners engineer for the project. Imperial Oil expects to complete the permitting process and have the majority of its contractors selected by 2008, in order to proceed to construction by the winter of 2008. The construction schedule entails a three-winter construction program with completion scheduled for some time in 2008.
