Five Western Canadian provinces fall in the top 10 states/provinces for Metals & Minerals project activity in North America, mainly due to oil sands developments in Alberta and mining projects in Alberta and the other provinces. One of the largest projects under construction in Western Canada is Shell Canada Limited's (Calgary, Alberta) Jackpine oil sands mine. Construction started in late 2006 on the Jackpine project. AMEC-Colt (Fort McMurray, Alberta) is providing engineering and construction services for the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2010.
While representing a smaller value in projects at $2.4 billion, the Great Lakes Region, with 39 projects under construction, has the largest number of projects. Great Lakes projects include everything from a new metallurgical coke manufacturing plant under construction at U.S. Steel's (NYSE:X) ((Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) steel mill in Granite City, Illinois, to a new structural steel fabrication plant being built on a brownfield site in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Casadei Structural Steel Incorporated (Sterling Heights) is completing site preparation, electrical upgrades and parking lot improvements at the brownfield site formerly occupied by Insite Industries.
Looking ahead, there are plenty of opportunities on the books for equipment and service providers doing business in North America. Industrial Info is tracking more than 900 Metals & Minerals projects totaling more than $167 billion scheduled to begin construction in 2009 or beyond.
