Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Metro Terminals Corporation (Brooklyn, New York), a family-owned wholesale distributor of petroleum products, and new subsidiary Metro BioFuels LLC (Brooklyn) are progressing with construction of the country's largest biodiesel plant in the heart of Brooklyn.
Construction of the estimated $120 million plant started in fall 2008, and Metro is shooting for an October or November completion of the project.
The company also recently received authorization for $9.95 million in triple tax-exempt bond financing from the state to develop another biodiesel plant at the former Calverton Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve on Long Island. The plant, which is expected to be as large as the Brooklyn plant, is currently in permitting and construction isn't expected to get under way until spring 2010.
Once the plant is completed, Metro will be operating two of the largest biodiesel plants in the country and have a combined capacity of producing 220 million gallons per year of the renewable fuel. The company plans on capitalizing on New York's estimated 500 million-gallon-per-year heating oil market.
Industrial Info's Ethanol Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging alternative fuels market. This database covers 177 ethanol plants in operation and 530 plants under development. It also covers 145 operational biodiesel plants and 245 biodiesel plants under development.
