Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cane sugar producers in Mexico are developing plans to increase output and improve the reliability and efficiency of their sugar-manufacturing assets. Industrial Info has identified more than 150 capital and maintenance projects in Mexico's sugar sector that have a cumulative investment value of $1.6 billion. Plans include building ethanol units and boilers, installing electric power generation units, adding processing equipment, and annual maintenance programs. Projects range in value from $1 million to $100 million.

Projects listed in the planning stages total 101 worth $1.1 billion, while the sum of expenditures in the approval and engineering stage points to 19 projects, valued at $297 million. For example, Corporacion Industrial Gargonz (Mexico City, Mexico) is developing a $30 million project to increase sugar production from 45,000 tons to 90,000 tons per day at a plant in Veracruz. In another development, Compania Azucarera de los Mochis (Sinaloa, Mexico) is in the early design stages to build a $70 million grassroot sugar refinery in Ahome.

Regarding maintenance expenditures, there are 30 projects with a combined value of $138 million. During the "off-season," manufacturers perform extensive repairs and replacements throughout the manufacturing complex.

Producers will invest more than $750 million to add new power-generating equipment. Plans call for the addition of steam turbine generators, ranging from 5 megawatts to 30 megawatts.

According to Industrial Info's Online Plant Database, Mexico has 55 cane sugar manufacturing plants.
