Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The sugar industry in Mexico is expanding and investing in additional electrical generating capacity. Industrial Info has identified more than $750 million in project spending plans that are tied to the installation of 35 new steam turbine generators. The combined total of the proposed units comes out to just more than 570 megawatts (MW).
Turbine units range in size from 2 to 40 MW and are primarily steam turbines, with the exception of a couple of gas turbines.
Most of the new capacity will be utilized to support the current and future growth of manufacturing operations. However, electricity will be sold on the open market during the off-season and periods of low demand.
One example of the industry's expansion plans is a project by Grupo Motzorongo to increase the capacity of its power plant from 10 to 25 MW at a sugar processing facility in Tezonapa, Veracruz. Construction is slated to begin in 2015, with startup scheduled for the end of 2016.
