Midwest Biofuel Putting Finishing Touches on New Biodiesel Plant in Wisconsin

Researched by Industrial Info Resources, Incorporated (Sugar Land, Texas). Privately held Midwest Biofuel LLC (Macon, Georgia) is putting the finishing touches and testing equipment in anticipation of starting up production operations on a new biodiesel plant located in Clinton, Wisconsin. Construction began September 2006 and the project is scheduled to begin production in about two weeks.

Once operational, the plant has the flexibility of using any oil feedstock, but will primarily use soybean oil. One of the key factors that led the company to Clinton is that Rock County is the largest soybean producer in the state and is close to major end-user markets in Milwaukee and Chicago.

Once fully operational, the plant will have the capacity of producing 10 million gallons per year of biodiesel and has been designed to expand to 20 million gallons per year.

Biodiesel production in Wisconsin has been gaining steam and the state now has two operating plants and another nearing completion. Sanimax Energy has been operating a 20 million gallon per year plant in De Forest since March of this year and BEST Energies commissioned an 8 million gallon per year plant earlier this month. North Prairie Productions was on schedule to put a 45 million gallon per year plant in Evansville online in the spring, but has halted construction on the project due to high feedstock prices.

Other biodiesel projects are set to be built in Owen, Milwaukee, Ripon and Chetek.

Even with all of this project activity, Wisconsin does not breech the top 20 states for biodiesel project development. Wisconsin ranks as the 22nd largest state for biodiesel project development, in an industry where 191 projects are underdevelopment for a total exceeding $7.3 billion. This makes it one of North American hottest industries going into 2008.
