Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). There are currently 106 grassroot plants planned to begin commercial operation in the U.S. Southwest market region during 2005. The region, consisting of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, could see over 12,000 new jobs over the next year from this construction activity. These new plants would equal an increase of almost 2.5% in the total number of operational industrial plants in the Southwest region, if schedules remain as planned.
The Industrial Manufacturing and Food & Beverage industries represent almost 50% of the planned activity in 2005, with 55 new plants. This representation isn't unusual, as the two industries make up over 38% of the region's existing plant population. The industry that is showing performance beyond what is typical for the region is the Pharmaceutical-Biotech industry, with an estimated eleven new plants planned to startup in 2005. These new plants equal a 19% increase in the number of operations plants or research centers in the region for this industry segment, with over half of them being research and development centers located on university campuses across the region.
Texas will be home to an overwhelming majority of the new plants, with 71 currently planned or under construction, followed by Louisiana, with sixteen, Oklahoma with fourteen, and Arkansas gaining five new plants.
Some of the largest employers planning to start up in 2005 are Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, Wal-Mart Stores Incorporated, and Wellman Products Group. Toyota's new site in San Antonio will provide an estimated 2,000 new jobs in Texas starting later this year, and is attracting another 1,500 employees at the eighteen on-campus suppliers. Wal-Mart is constructing two large distribution centers in Texas, one in Sealy and another in Baytown, that when combined, offer employment for an estimated 1,000 people. Wellman's new plant in Catoosa, Oklahoma, is expected to begin operations in the next few months and provide nearly 300 new jobs.
As these new industrial plants become operational, each is included in Industrialinfo.com's Online Plant Directory for the Southwest market region. Industrialinfo.com provides access to thousands of industrial process plants, with management contacts for each through the continuously updated Online Plant Directory.
