Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mustus Energy Limited (Calgary, Alberta) has begun construction on the company's first biomass-fired power plant, which will be located in La Crete, Alberta. With an abundant supply of aspen trimmings from the boreal forest, the company plans to convert residual wood from tree harvesting mixed with sawmill waste to produce 41.5 megawatts (MW) of renewable power for the Alberta grid.
Hemaras Construction Incorporated (Calgary) has completed about 25% of the earth and underground work. Lockheed Martin Canada (NYSE:LMT) (Ottawa, Ontario) is the design-build contractor for the estimated $170 million project.
Full construction is expected to begin in the spring of next year and commissioning and start-up are planned for May or June 2014. The company also has plans to construct five additional biomass plants in Alberta, but has yet to release details on locations or timing.
The plant will consume more than 320,000 metric tons per year of wood fuel annually, utilizing a Babcock & Wilcox refuse-derived fuel boiler (with a 126,000-kilogram-per-hour steam flow) to drive a single, multi-stage turbine generator.
The project is located approximately 11 kilometers from La Crete, and will be located at the northwest corner of Township Road 106-2 and Range Road 14-0, adjacent to Precision Lumber Saw Mill. The land is currently not being used, but had been used for agricultural purposes in the past. Connection to the grid will be through a 144-kilovolt transmission line from the power plant to the new proposed ATCO Electric substation.
