Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $9.88 billion of industrial projects that are scheduled to kick off in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region in the fourth quarter of 2014. The Alternative Fuels and Power industries lead all other industries in total investment value (TIV), but the former's total is attributed entirely to two projects. Almost 90% of the Power Industry's total is driven by six natural gas-related projects.

The Mid-Atlantic region includes the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the Carolinas.

The larger of the two Alternative Fuels projects set to kick off in the fourth quarter is TransGas Development Systems LLC's (New York, New York) the $3 billion construction of a coal-to-liquids plant in Wharncliffe, West Virginia. The project involves building a facility and installing gasifiers that will utilize Udhe Corporation of America's PRENFLO technology to turn 7,500 tons per day of coal into 18,000 barrels per day of gasoline. IC Skanska (Evansville, Indiana) is performing construction management services.

The other Alternative Fuels project is Enviva Pellets Sampson LLC's (Bethesda, Maryland) $95 million construction of a fuel pellet mill in Clinton, North Carolina. The new facility is expected to process wood waste into 500,000 tons per year of wood fuel pellets. Completion on both projects is expected in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Of the 21 Power Industry projects with a TIV of more than $2.6 billion that are set to kick off in the fourth quarter, the largest is Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated's (Braintree, Massachusetts) $900 million construction of a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant in St. Charles, Maryland. The 711-megawatt facility will utilize a 2-on-1 configuration, including two 213-MW GE MS7001FA .05 combustion turbine generators, with duct-fired heat-recovery steam generators, and a 285-MW GE (or equivalent) steam turbine generator. SNC-Lavalin Constructors Incorporated (Bothell, Washington) is performing engineering, procurement and construction services. Completion is expected toward the middle of 2017.

The Metals & Minerals Industry takes the bronze with almost $2 billion from a dozen projects that are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter. More than half of that value is attributed to Toray Industries Incorporated's (Tokyo, Japan) $1 billion construction of a carbon fibers manufacturing plant in Moore, South Carolina. The new plant will produce 1,800 to 2,000 metric tonnes per day of carbon fibers, which eventually will be expanded to 3,600 tonnes per day. The project is expected to be completed early in 2016.

Close to 80% of the TIV--almost $8 billion--is related to 58 projects that currently are in the planning stages, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. Thirty projects worth nearly $2 billion are in the engineering stage, while 75 projects worth $152 million already have kicked off the first stage of construction and will kick off the second stage in the fourth quarter.
