NextEra's Jericho Windfarm Begins Operations in Ontario

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 150-megawatt (MW) Jericho windfarm, which is located in Lambton County, Ontario, began commercial operations late last month, following its completion by NextEra Energy Canada (Toronto, Ontario), a subsidiary of NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida).

The new windfarm is utilizing 1.6-MW turbines from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut). The project was proposed and approved under the provincial Feed-In-Tariff program, an incentive-based program introduced by the Ontario Power Authority.

The project will supply electricity to Ontario Power Authority under a 20-year contract, and it will provide enough energy to power more than 50,000 homes annually. The testing and commissioning period began late last year.

Construction of the plant was completed by NextEra Energy Canada and Borea Construction (Quebec City, Quebec). It was approved by the Ministry of the Environment on its Renewable Energy Approval application.
