Norbord Moving Forward with Environmental Improvements at New York MDF Mill

A project report released by Industrialinfo.com in the fall of 1998 indicated that Norbord was in the early stages of identifying the impact of upcoming federal and local environmental mandates on the mill

Released Tuesday, April 26, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). After several years of reviewing environmental compliance options, Norbord Incorporated (TSX:NBD)(Toronto, Ontario) has finally selected a method by which to reduce and control emissions at its medium density fiberboard (mdf) mill in Deposit, New York. A project report released by Industrialinfo.com in the fall of 1998 indicated that Norbord was in the early stages of identifying the impact of upcoming federal and local environmental mandates on the mill, particularly, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule regarding volatile organic compounds (VOC's). Over the past few years, the company has considered implementing regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO), bio-filtration, and a wet electrostatic precipitator.

Norbord recently placed an order for three RTOs from Megtec Systems, Incorporated (DePere, Wisconsin), with the first unit scheduled for delivery in May 2005, and the remaining two arriving on site in June and July. Emissions from the primary dryer will be collected in one of the RTOs and a dual cyclone (70-foot) with a high efficiency quad cyclone with either a dual 400hp fan or single 800hp fan on the primary dryer. Emissions from the press exhaust will be contained by a dual barrel cyclone and RTO. The last RTO will treat emissions from the secondary dryer. Norbord anticipates that all systems will be in place by the end of the year.

The Deposit mill, located in southern New York, was built in 1965 and today employs 100 workers. Annual production of MDF at the mill is approximately 160 million square feet (3/8-inch basis).

Norbord Inc. is an international wood-based panelboard producer with assets of US$ 1.4 billion and annual sales in excess of $1 billion. The company is one of the largest producers of OSB in the world and has 16 operations in the United States, Europe and Canada.
