Nova Scotia's North Beaverbank Windfarm Begins Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North Beaverbank Community Windfarm, an 8-megawatt (MW) windfarm located 14 kilometers north of Sackville, Nova Scotia, began commercial operations earlier this month. The project will supply electricity to utility Nova Scotia Power (Halifax, Nova Scotia) under a 20-year contract approved by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.

The windfarm, which utilizes Vestas' (Aarhus, Denmark) V100 turbines, will provide enough energy for 3,000 Nova Scotian homes annually. Construction of the plant, which began in May 2014, was completed by Scotian Windfields (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and WEB Wind Energy North America (Toronto, Ontario).

The project was proposed and approved under Nova Scotia's Community Feed-in Tariff (COMFIT) Program, an incentive-based program introduced by the province's Department of Energy.

Scotian WindFields has three other COMFIT projects slated to be operational by the end of the year in Annapolis, Inverness and Yarmouth counties. All are 2-MW, single-turbine ventures.
