Preliminary design is being developed for a 240-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Smoky Falls Hydro Station (Kapuskasing, Ontario), with construction scheduled for 2008-2009 and completion in late 2010 or early 2011. The 56 MW hydro facility consists of four 14 MW turbine/generator sets that became operational in 1928.

The plan is to install three 80 MW turbine/generators at the site and retire the four existing units when the new ones come online.

Hatch Acres Energy (Niagara Falls, Ontario) is providing engineering services for the estimated $200 million project. The company provides a range of services from energy consulting to engineering to management.

Ontario Power Generation is also considering the possibility of adding an 80 MW turbine/generator to or upgrading the existing 140 MW Kipling Hydro Generating Station (Kapuskasing, Ontario), the 136 MW Harmon Hydro Generating Station (Kapuskasing, Ontario), and the 140 MW Little Long Generating Station (Kapuskasing, Ontario) by 2010.
