Ontario Power Selects Contractor for Coal-to-Biomass Conversion Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ontario Power Generation Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) has selected its design and construction firm to carry out the company's conversion of a coal-fired generating station in Aitkokan, Ontario.

Aecon Industrial (Cambridge, Ontario), which is one of Canada's largest construction companies, received an $85 million contract award to convert the plant to burn biomass. Doosan (Changwon, South Korea) was selected to handle modifications to the combustion system.

Site work at the plant is just getting under way, and the project is expected to be completed by mid-2014. Plans are to convert two Babcock & Wilcox coal-fired boilers to burn biomass material mainly wood fuel pellets. Once completed, the plant will have the capacity of generating over 230 mega-watts of electricity.

The conversion is part of the utility company's and the Ontario government's plan to have all coal-fired units cease using coal to generate electricity by the end of 2014. The conversion project represents a capital investment of around $170 million.
