Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--An official "silver shovel" groundbreaking ceremony took place last month for a project that will produce biofuels from food, yard waste and curbside collected waste. The city of Surrey, British Columbia, has partnered with Hoofdkantoor Orgaworld Nederland BV (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) and Canadian division Orgaworld Canada LLC (London, Ontario) to develop the organic biofuel facility.
Orgaworld will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the facility through a 25-year agreement with the city.
The estimated $68 million project will take in the waste stream and run it through a biological treatment system, which will process 115,000 tons per year of organic waste into 8 million cubic yards per year of biogas. The product will be used as transportation fuel for the city's central heating plant.
The organic biofuel facility will be the first fully integrated, closed-loop waste management system in North America. It will help Metro Vancouver reach its goal of 70% of waste diversion from landfills.
The plant also will produce a compost-like product to be used for landscaping and agricultural purposes.
Full construction is not expected until April or May of this year. The facility is expected to be running and producing fuel by early 2017.
