Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The city of Surrey in British Columbia has partnered with Hoofdkantoor Orgaworld Nederland BV (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands) and its Canadian division, Orgaworld Canada LLC (London, Ontario), to build an organic biofuel facility. Biogas upgrading equipment provider Greenlane Biogas North America Limited (Burnaby, British Columbia) has signed up to aid in the project.

In early 2015, the city signed a 25-year agreement with Orgaworld, Canada LLC to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the facility. Construction has reached the half way point.

The estimated $68 million project will take in Surrey's waste streams of food, yard waste and curbside collected waste and run it through a biological treatment system, which will process 115,000 tons per year of organic waste into 8 million cubic yards per year of biogas. The product will be used as transportation fuel for the city's fleet of natural-gas-powered vehicles as well as biogas for the city's central heating plant.

Greenlane Biogas was awarded a contract to supply a biogas upgrading system and a CO2 recovery unit for the project. Smith Bros & Wilson Limited (Vancouver, British Columbia) was selected as the prime contractor to build the facility.

The 154,171-square-foot facility is located on a 6.6-acre site next to the Surrey transfer station in Port Kells.

The facility is expected to be running and producing fuel by early 2017.
