The remaining states boasting a significant presence in industrial employment are Nebraska with over 66,000 employees, South Dakota with over 24,000 and North Dakota with over 12,000 employees.
Of Industrialinfo.com's Twelve Major Industrial Industries, the industrial manufacturing sector leads the region in employment with just under 400,000 employees at 920 manufacturing plants. These plants include aircraft assembly plants, aircraft and automobile parts manufacturing, electronic component plants and heavy equipment manufacturing. At a distant second is the food processing industry with over 185,000 employees at 839 plants, followed by the minerals, metals and mining industry with 59,000 employees at 310 plants.
Other industries covered include pulp, paper and wood, pharmaceutical-biotech, chemical processing, petroleum refining, oil and natural gas processing, storage and transmission, synthetic fuels and the power industry. While only representing just under two percent of total employment for the region, 14,570 employees at 290 plants, the power industry leads the pack for capital and maintenance spending with over $2 billion scheduled for kick off during the last half of 2003.
