PacifiCorp Adds 217 Megawatts of Wind Power in 2008

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--PacifiCorp (Portland, Oregon) closed out 2008 with a bang. They were able to provide 217 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the grid by bringing three windfarms online. The Glenrock Wind Energy Project is located in Converse County, Wyoming, where the former Johnston Coal Mine was in operation for more than 40 years until 2000. Reclamation of the mined land involves a 9-mile stretch, and work to restore the land to its natural beauty is underway. The Glenrock Wind Energy Project consists of Glenrock, Rolling Hills, and Glenrock III windfarms.

The first phase of the Glenrock Wind Energy Project and the Rolling Hills Windfarm consisted of constructing 66 General Electric (NYSE:GE) 1.5-megawatt (MW) wind turbines. Each windfarm has a nameplate production capacity of 99 MW. Construction on the Glenrock windfarm and Rolling Hills windfarms began in early spring of 2008 and was completed in December. Rolling Hills is also located on the Glenrock site and is adjacent to the Glenrock windfarm.

Glenrock III is the third windfarm PacifiCorp put online before the end of 2008. This windfarm is also located in Converse County, Wyoming, and is adjacent to both Glenrock and Rolling Hills windfarms. Glenrock III consists of 26 General Electric 1.5-MW wind turbines and produces 39 MW of electricity. The output of Glenrock will go to a new 34.5/230-kilovolt (kV) substation and will interconnect via a 230-kV transmission line to a 230-kV substation near the Dave Johnston power plant near Glenrock.

Tetra Tech Incorporated (NASDAQ:TTEK) provided engineering, procurement, and construction for the Glenrock Wind Energy Project. An estimated 66,000 homes will benefit from the green power provided by the installation of these wind farms.
