Patent Waiver Bolsters Bangladesh's Pharma Industry, an Industrial Info Market Brief

Despite a raft of challenges, including a heavy dependency on imported raw materials, Bangladesh's Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry posted double-digit growth for the past year, largely fueled by patent waivers offered by the World Trade Organization (WTO) to its members in the least-developed countries (LDCs). In 2015, the WTO Council extended patent-royalty waivers up to January 2033 for pharmaceutical products from its LDC category.

According to Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), medical exports grew to $130 million in the 2018-19 fiscal year, from $103.46 million the previous year. Industrial Info is tracking more than 900 pharmaceutical and biotech plants in South Asia, with more than 3,700 functional management contacts.
