Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The groundbreaking ceremony for Phase I of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Group's (Jiugang Group) (Jiayuguan) Jiayuguan Aluminum Smelter Power Station was held in Jiuquan Wind Power Base on July 28, 2012, according to an announcement from the Power Construction Corporation of China (PCCC) (Beijing) on July 30.

The Jiayuguan Aluminum Smelter is located south of Jiabei Industrial Park, which is about eight kilometers northwest of Jiayuguan City downtown. Gansu Dongxing Aluminum Company Limited (Lanzhou, Gansu), a fully owned subsidiary of Jiugang Group, is responsible for the construction and operation of the project. The aluminum smelter has a total planned capacity of 1 million metric tons per year, to be built in phases. Phase I saw 450,000 tons per yearput into operation in December 2011. As a self-service power plant for Jiugang Group's 1 million-metric-ton-per-year aluminum smelter in Jiayuguan City, the associated power station will be furnished with two 350-megawatt (MW), supercritical, indirect air-cooling, coal-fired units in the initial stage. Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (Xi'an, Shaanxi) is responsible for the design and engineering of the power station.

According to the bidding result announced on July 18, construction of the project will be carried out by the PCCC and China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) (Beijing). Hebei Electric Power Construction No.2 Engineering Company Limited (Zhengzhou, Henan), a subsidiary of the PCCC, will be responsible for Bid 1--namely, the civil works of the main powerhouse, as well as the erection of mechanical and electrical equipment (excluding the desulfuration device). Northeast No.2 Electric Power Construction Company (Dalian, Liaoning) and The Fourth Northeast Electric Power Engineering Company (Liaoyang, Liaoning), two subsidiaries of the CEEC, will be responsible for the construction of Bid 1 and Bid 3 of the project, respectively.

According to the schedule, the first unit of the project will begin operations in January 2014 and the second unit in April 2014.
