Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Philippines Department of Energy (DoE) continues to expand its plans for new power generation plants to give the country energy security. It has now confirmed a proposal for an additional 1,400 megawatts (MW) of power sourced from liquefied natural gas (LNG), which will supplement the current gas-fired capacity of 2,700 MW.
The three plants are scheduled to come onstream from 2016 through 2021. They will cover a 300-MW to 500-MW plant with the gas feed coming from Shell Philippines (NYSE:RDS) (The Hague, Netherlands); a 300-MW project from Energy World International, the Hong Kong-based power and infrastructure developer; and a 480-MW power plant, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study with the proposed site in Lemay, Bataan.
The power distribution and generation company Meralco also has said that it sees LNG-fired power projects feasible at greater capacities reaching up to 1,500 MW.
Meralco (PSE:MER) (Manila) President Oscar S. Reyes said that a plan is under consideration by the DoE to set up an LNG regasification facility in Batangas, which would in part serve as a backup unit for gas supplies from the Malampaya field.
