Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Almost two years ago P&O Ports North America (Iselin, New Jersey) and P&O Nedlloyd (London, United Kingdom) signed a thirty-year lease to operate a major container terminal in Port Newark. To fulfill that obligation they created Port Newark Container Terminal (Port Newark, New Jersey) to be one of P&O Ports flagship operations. In order to meet the high expectations, Port Newark Container Corporation developed a $150 million redevelopment plant designed to bring the container terminal up to date and to expand its capacity to one million TEU's per year.
This May, the redevelopment project will be completed at the 158 acre terminal. The project consisted of a new entry complex, two new post-panamax quay twin-lift cranes, the demolition of existing buildings to expand the container yard, a new administration complex, new engineering and operational buildings, electrical supply upgrades, wharf upgrades, dredging of one berth to a 50' depth and one berth to a 40' depth, plus 33 twin-lift straddle cranes. In addition, two more new post-panamax quay twin-lift cranes should be delivered by August 2003 and dredging (50' depth) on a third berth will be completed in October 2003.
Further expansion will be considered in the future if the market demands it. The port maintains an additional 15 acres for future expansion and other sites may become available if they are needed.
While other terminals at the port (Maher Terminals Incorporated & Universal/APM Terminals) are about to begin their redevelopment plans, Port Newark Container Terminal is finishing theirs, placing them in a very good position to get a leg up on their local competition.
Port Newark Container Terminal is a subsidiary of P&O Ports North America and P&O Nedlloyd and is based in Port Newark, NJ. Port Newark Container Terminal is a world-class facility servicing Port Newark and capable of handling almost one million TEU's per year through its 158 acre site.
P&O Ports North America is a leading global port operator, with container and general cargo facilities in 19 countries. Currently, P&O Ports handles over 8 million TEU's annually and employs over 12,000.
P&O Nedlloyd is one of the worlds leading shipping lines and is the world's 4th largest container shipping company by capacity, operating 157 vessels and totaling 407,000 TEU's annually.
