Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global Ethanol (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is now running a renewable fuel plant from renewable energy. The company's 100 million-gallon-per-year fuel ethanol plant in Lakota, Iowa, which was expanded in 2007, is now running on wind power generated by Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative's (Estherville, Iowa) seven-turbine windfarm near Lakota. The windfarm has a 10.5-megawatt (MW) capacity.
The renewable electricity is purchased by Corn Belt Power Cooperative (Humboldt, Iowa) and connected to the grid by Corn Belt's Hummel and Gerald South electrical substations. Each of the 21 GE Energy wind turbines produces 1.5 MW of power. The turbines were commissioned in April, and the company dedicated the new windfarms this month.
Great Lakes Electric is the first company in the U.S. to provide a renewable powering a renewable.
