Indian vaccine major Serum Institute of India (SII) is set to start trials to determine the efficacy of the tuberculosis vaccine Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in boosting immunity among high-risk groups to fight COVID-19, according to local news accounts.

SII will administer a recombinant BCG vaccine to the high-risk category, which includes the elderly, people with co-morbid conditions and healthcare workers. The company is likely to start the trials in the state of Maharashtra, particularly in Pune city, and it will involve at least 2,000 to 3,000 people.

SII is has partnered with U.S.-based biotechnology firm Codagenix Incorporated to develop a live attenuated vaccine against the virus, has caused more 178,000 deaths globally, infecting more than 2.58 million.
