Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Site preparation recently began on the 210-megawatt, Phase IV expansion at Minnesota Power's (Duluth, Minnesota) Bison Wind Energy Center in New Salem, North Dakota. Siemens Power Generation (NYSE:SI) was chosen as the prime contractor and turbine supplier.
The $345 million, Phase IV expansion includes 64 state-of-the-art, 3.2-MW Siemens wind turbine generators, along with 11 miles of new, 230-kilovolt transmission lines. Project completion on this phase is scheduled by the end of 2014.
When completed, total capacity at the Bison site will be approximately 500 MW with 165 wind turbine generators. This will make the Bison site the largest windfarm in North Dakota. The turbines are spread across Morton and Oliver counties.
Siemens also was involved in phases I through III, along with Michels Wind Energy (Brownsville, Wisconsin). Michels Wind is not involved in Phase IV.
Construction on the 37-MW Phase IA, with 16 Siemens wind turbine generators, started in 2010. Phase 1B, with 15 turbines, started in 2011, followed by 35 105-MW turbines in Phase II and 35 turbines in Phase III at the end of 2012.
