Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sinopec's (Beijing) grassroot 500,000-ton-per-year polyglycolic acid (PGA) project in China's Zhijin County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, has resumed construction. The first phase will build a 200,000-ton-per-year PGA plant.
The project, which uses coal as raw material, started construction in October 2021. Affected by the pandemic, it was put on hold on September 8 of this year, before resuming construction on October 17. The project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in June 2025. PGA is a biodegradable, aliphatic polymer that is especially suitable for disposable plastic products; and compared with other biodegradable plastics, PGA has good biocompatibility and can be broken down into water and carbon dioxide in the human body, so it is widely used in medical surgical sutures, internal fixation of fractures, tissue-engineering repair materials and drug-controlled release. According to a branch of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, "the goal of tissue engineering is to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs."
