Tetra Pak Plans Production Capacity Expansion of Carton Packaging in Brazil

Tetra Pak, a leader in the Brazilian market for carton packaging, is planning an expansion of production capacity at the Ponta Grossa Packaging Mill in 2013 and 2015.

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Tetra Pak (Sao Paulo, Brazil), a leader in the Brazilian market for carton packaging, is planning an expansion of production capacity at the Ponta Grossa Packaging Mill (Paraná, Brazil) in 2013 and 2015. The total cost of the investment is $100 million.

The project involves the expansion of the facility production capacity by almost a 45% by the end of 2015. This expansion consists of the addition of two new lines of production to be developed in two phases: the first phase will almost double the mill's capacity from 7 billon packaging containers per year to 11.5 billion per year. This phase will be completed by mid-2013. The second phase is planned for 2015 and it will increase the total production capacity to 14 billion packaging containers per year.

In addition to supplying other countries--approximately 20% of national production of Tetra Pak is aimed at exports--the new line at Ponta Grossa will serve specific markets. Executives explained that the use of carton packaging has the potential to include market fruit-based beverages, which will increase by more than 10% per annum for more than five years, and other variations, such as soy-based beverages or cereals.

The Ponta Grossa Packaging Paperboard Mill is located in the state of Paraná. Its current capacity is 7 billon packaging containers per year, but the design capacity of the facility is 14 billion. About 300 employees are working at the facility.

Tetra Pak is a multinational food packaging and processing company with head offices in Lund Sweden, and Lausanne, Switzerland. In Brazil, Tetra Pak has two packaging plants and eight sales offices. The first factory was opened in 1978 in the city of Monte Mor (São Paulo), and the second was opened in 1999 in Ponta Grossa (Paraná).
