See May 13, 2004 news article - Harris County, Texas Continues its Role as the Nation's Industrial Construction Market Leader. Harris County, Texas is still the most active county in the nation with 115 projects, totaling $2.8 billion.

Los Angeles County, California, while remaining second after Harris County, experienced a significant increase in project spending when compared to last year’s figures. The number of projects increased from 73 to 79 and the total investment value of those projects increased from $2.2 billion to $5.3 billion! This is mainly due to the addition of some major projects in the county, such as the $1.37 billion Foothill light rail expansion being developed by the Metro Gold Line Construction Authority, which is scheduled to begin construction next year.

Mobile County, Alabama is new to the Top 20 list with 31 projects totaling $2.8 billion, including $600 million in project activity being developed by ConocoPhillips and EADS North America. ConocoPhillips is developing an LNG Terminal at Dauphin Island, Alabama. EADS North America is studying construction of a grassroot aerial refueling aircraft manufacturing plant for the Air Force in Mobile County.

All in all, the counties making the Top 20 list are planning a combined $39.6 billion in project work based on 825 capital and maintenance projects reported during the past twelve month period. That’s a 13% increase when compared to 2004’s figure of $35 billion.
