TransGas Development Receives Permit for $3 Billion Coal-to-Gasoline Plant in West Virginia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held TransGas Development Systems LLC (New York, New York) has been issued a permit by West Virginia to develop a $3 billion coal-to-gasoline plant in Mingo County, West Virginia. The company is waiting on financing before the project can move into the construction phase.

Plans call for the creation of a gasification facility that will process 3 million tons of coal per year into 6.5 million barrels of gasoline. The company will use Uhde Corporation of America's (Bridgeville, Pennsylvania) proprietary PRENFLO gasification process technology with direct quench to turn coal into transportation fuel.

Uhde is currently performing front-end engineering and design for the project and expects to secure financing in early 2011. The company will seek a turnkey engineer, procurement and construction contractor for the facility. Construction is expected to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2011, and commercial operation is expected to commence by late 2014.

The plant will be located in the town of Wharncliffe, West Virginia, in Mingo County, roughly 60 miles south of Charleston.
