Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is awaiting permits for an addition to the 2,558-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Paradise Power Station, which is located in Drakesboro, Kentucky.
The coal-fired facility currently includes three General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) steam turbine generators, with three Babcock & Wilcox (NYSE:BWC) (Charlotte, North Carolina) cyclone-fired, wet-bottom boilers. The first unit became operational in 1963.
TVA plans to shut down two coal units, with a combined capacity of 1,408 MW, by 2017 and construct a 1,000-MW, combined-cycle unit to replace them. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2017.

The combined-cycle addition will consist of two General Electric gas turbines; two Vogt HRSGs; and a Toshiba (Tokyo) steam turbine. Kiewit Power (Lenexa, Kansas), which is part of Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska), already has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. However, TVA is still waiting for the air permits to come through, which are not expected until early 2015.
Some site-clearing and road construction have started, but the actual construction won't begin until March or April, if permits are received.
