Two Biofuel Projects Moving Forward in Goodland, Kansas

Two start-up, investor-owned biofuel projects are moving forward in the small town of Goodland, Kansas, near the Colorado state line in the central western part of the state. E Caruso Ethanol, LLC (Goodland, Kansas) and Kanza Energy, LLC (Goodland, Kansas), formerly known as RER Biodiesel LLC, are planning to build new ethanol and biodiesel plants in the state, along with a 20-megawatt coal/biomass-fired power plant, which will go by Goodland Energy Resources LLC. All three projects are known as the Goodland Energy Center.

E Caruso is about 20-30% complete with building construction on its project and is planning to ultimately operate a 20 million-gallon per year fuel ethanol plant. JMC Engineering, LLC (Goodland, Kansas) is providing engineering for the project, and Agri Systems, Incorporated (Billings, Montana) was awarded the general construction contract. All civil/site work is complete and the plant is scheduled to begin producing ethanol by late 2007 or early 2008. Construction costs to build the plant are approxiamtely $26 million.

Kanza Energy, LLC (Goodland, Kansas) is developing a 25 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant. JMC is also handling engineering for this $26 million project and construction is expected to be in full swing within 60-90 days and a completion target date of late 2007 has been set.

Plans are also in the works to develop Goodland Energy Resources LLC, a 20-26-megawatt coal-fired power plant project. Work has been off and on due to weather issues and the project is expected to continue its push forward.

Currently, there are four biorefineries under construction is Kansas, Nesika Energy in Scandia; Gateway Ethanol in Pratt and Conestoga Energy Partners is building two plants in Kansas located in Garden City and Kismet.
