Two Fuel-Ethanol Projects Planned for Peru Total More Than $350 Million

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Two fuel-ethanol plants will be built in the state of Piura in northwestern Peru. One of these is owned by Maple Etanol SRL (Sullana, Peru), a subsidiary of Maple Energy plc (LSE:MPLE) (Dublin, Ireland), and will require an investment of $222 million. The other plant will cost $130 million and belongs to Agricola del Chira SA (Lima), a subsidiary of the Peruvian business group Grupo Romero (Lima).

Maple's ethanol plant will be located in the city of Sullana. The fuel-ethanol production capacity will be 35 million gallons per year, around 65% of which will be used in Peru, with the remaining 35% to be exported. Project planners are also studying bagasse-based generation of power to supply the plant and sell to the national grid. The equipment has already been ordered. PRAJ Industries Limited (BSE:522205) (Pune, India) will build the fermentation, distillation and dehydration equipments. Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) will supply the turbogenerator, and Uni-systems (Sao Paulo, Brazil) will be in charge of the sugarcane diffuser. Maple started preparing the site in November, and a construction company will be selected in January 2009. The start of operations is expected to be around October 2010.

Agricola del Chira SA will build its plant in San Jacinto city. The fuel-ethanol production capacity will be around 30 million gallons per year. Power will be generated at these facilities as well, but only to supply the plant operations. An expansion of the powerhouse in order to sell energy to the grid is planned for the future, but the dates have not yet been decided. Construction of the plant began in August and is expected to be completed by July 2009. The company in charge of the engineering, procurement and construction is Uni-systems.
