Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Power Station, which is located near Columbia, Alabama, took one of its two units offline Thursday after it attempted to return to service from a re-fueling outage. The station is owned by Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia).
Farley's Unit 1, which generates 851 megawatts (MW), was slowly ramping online after completing a month-long maintenance outage. Fuel rods were replaced, turbine work was performed, and several maintenance components were repaired during the routine outage. The unit had reached about 25% when an electrical issue systematically tripped the reactor coolant pump out of service.
The unit was brought offline and repairs are under way. Maintenance personnel say that repairs will be complete Saturday, and unit should begin ramping up over the weekend.
The Farley plant has two units with a total generating capacity of 1,711 MW.
