Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Officials at Colonial Pipeline are expecting to begin to restore partial service to the pipeline by the end of this week. The nation's largest fuel pipeline was shut down on Friday following a ransomware attack.
In a statement, the company said: "Colonial Pipeline continues to dedicate vast resources to restoring pipeline operations quickly and safely. Segments of our pipeline are being brought back online in a stepwise fashion, in compliance with relevant federal regulations and in close consultation with the Department of Energy, which is leading and coordinating the Federal Government's response... the Colonial operations team is executing a plan that involves an incremental process that will facilitate a return to service in a phased approach. This plan is based on a number of factors with safety and compliance driving our operational decisions, and the goal of substantially restoring operational service by the end of the week."
At least two major Gulf Coast refineries had closed multiple units as of Monday in response to the attack.
"Refiners may need to curtail crude oil processing rates as storage may become an issue, until the pipeline resumes operation," said Chris Paschall, Industrial Info's vice president of research for the Petroleum Refining Industry.
The 5,500-mile Colonial Pipeline originates in Texas and traverses every state along the Gulf Coast (except Florida) and the East Coast, up through New Jersey. It carries more than 2.5 million barrels per day (BBL/d).
