U.S. FDA Gives Emergency Approval to Gilead's remdesivir As COVID-19 Treatment, an Industrial Info Market Brief

Starting this week, certain patients suffering from COVID-19 in the U.S. will have access to Gilead's anti-viral drug remdesivir. The emergency authorization acknowledges that there are no existing U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA)-approved products for the treatment of COVID-19, but that Gilead's drug "may benefit certain people in the hospital." Use of the drug is limited to severely-affected patients.

Gilead has been working on beefing up its manufacturing capacity through both in-house investments as well as contract manufacturing partners in North America, Europe and Asia. The company recently fast-tracked an additional production line installation at its facility in La Verne, California. Reports claim Gilead has 50,000 doses available at this time.
